When conservative procedures reach their limits, thermal denervation, as part of radiofrequency therapy, can provide sustainable pain relief in appropriate cases.

Thermo-degeneration: disruption of the transmission of pain signals by heat

This minimally invasive method precisely interrupts the pain pathway to the brain.

Interruption of the transmission of pain signals by heat

We are successfully using this method in the treatment of facet joint syndrome.

Typical target structures are the nerves that transmit pain impulses from the small vertebrae to the spinal cord and spinal cord. Since only the nerve endings that do not fulfill any further functions beyond pain conduction are treated, there are no subsequent impairments in daily life. The prerequisite for therapeutic success is the prior localization of the correct nerves. In addition to the initial consultation and the examination findings, diagnostic blockages help select the correct target structures for the thermal denervation.

How does the thermo-degeneration take place?

The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia and is therefore painless. A hospital stay is not necessary. Outpatient treatment is the norm at the Pain Clinic in Munich.

A special feature of the thermo-deafferentation procedure at the Schmerzwerkstatt München is the mandatory „intraoperative mapping.“ After placing the thermonode under the C-arch, minimal current pulses are applied. The tingling or pressure sensations triggered by these help pinpoint the pain nerve and thus ensure maximum safety. Only then is the minimally invasive ablation performed under local anesthesia. During the procedure, heart and respiratory function are monitored. Afterwards, a brief monitoring phase begins in our recovery room. The final examination concludes the treatment. Full physical fitness is restored from the day following the procedure.
